Should I pursue school nursing?

Published

Hi!

I am currently working my first job in a med-surg telemetry floor. To say that I hate it would be an understatement. I am so unhappy in my current position. This is my first position as a RN and I have been doing it for 5 months. I just don't think that hospital work is for me.

When I was in school I fell in love with three areas: school nursing, L&D, and psych. Lately I have been thinking a lot about a career in school nursing. But I am scared of what my peers will think of me. I'm afraid that a lot of people don't respect school nursing, but I can't help but think that that is where I will find a fulfilling career. I have a lot of respect for the career and the fact that school nurses are often the only medical resource for parents and children. I've worked with middle school and high school kids in the past and have coordinated many community programs. I really enjoyed coordinating activities and being a person that the kids could come to for resources.

Any school nurses out there that can give me advice? Any one out there that started out as a school nurse or went into school nursing early in their career?

Please help.

Thank you!

school nurses are very hard to get, Ive never seen that job available. Every Mom/nurse wants to work in her kids school. Good luck
