Should I go through Excelsior

Published

I have been a RRT for 15 years and had enrolled in a local community college for fast track nursing a few years back but I had to quit due to a personal matter. I want to go back into nursing and was looking at ways to go and still be able to work. I have to have a full time job. I was looking into Excelsior online for an Associate degree in nursing and then enroll into a BSN program in the state of South Carolina but not sure which program at this time. Anyone have an Excelsior degree and if so was it a good choice? Thank you KD

I thought Excelsior no longer accepted RTs, but perhaps I'm misinformed. In the past, I've known 2 RTs that successfully completed Excelsior's nursing program.

Specializes in NICU, ICU, PICU, Academia.

Are you able to relocate? WGU's pre-licensure program is designed for working adults but is only available in five states currently. An RT background would give you a definite edge with this program.

Specializes in EMT since 92, Paramedic since 97, RN and PHRN 2021.

I dont think Excelsior takes RRT's anymore. I may be wrong but I believe thats what i read.

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

RRTs are no longer eligible for Excelsior. Only current licensed and actively working LPNs, paramedics and certain military corpsmen.

Excelsior stopped accepting respiratory therapists ~2 years ago

If you have an Associates in RT, go for the BSN provided you have the sciences and maths. No need to do 4 years if you can do 2. Two Associates degrees is advancement.

RTs do not have any of the basic skills and knowledge for assessments and medication delivery to do a transition program like Excelsior. This is why only LPNs and Paramedics are allowed to take the program.
