I could use some advise! I work FT as a RN on a cardiothoracic step down unit and fill the position as charge nurse almost all the time. I now have a new nurse manager who I trust will make the floor better but will take a long time to turn things around. This manager also trusts me in helping to make decisions that affect the whole floor and is trying to create a position for me in particular that I could do more management/education for the floor, but he is presenting that to me next week. My floor has never kept a manager longer than 1 year for various reasons. I love the floor I work on, and the patients that I take care of, but do not get to do patient care all that often. My assignment to patient care might be increasing since I trained someone else to also be a charge nurse. This past semester I also did every other weekend for the school of nursing as an adjunct clincal instructor and enjoyed it. It was a refreshing new take on nursing and always interesting, but I was working ALL the time! i was offered to work again this fall for the first level students and do every other weekend, but I don't want to be working 96+ hours for the whole semester sometimes being 12 day stretches. Has anyone ever heard of shared positions between a nursing unit and the school of nursing for the same facility? I am thinking I could stay full time (which I need) and work on the floor and as an instructor and have the best of both worlds. I don't know how this would work with benefits, etc. The payroll would come out of the budget for which side I am working for. I feel like I could end up burned out if I keep doing what I'm doing, and keep working on the floor as charge nurse all the time. I also feel kind of stuck, being that there is no other nursing unit that I am interested in working on in the hospital. I have also been thinking of going back for my MSN but not sure what direction to go, I think education might be the route but I want to keep my options open and always have a back up plan. Please help!!! Thank you :)
