In a March post I told everyone on the forum about the massive layoffs (more than 15,000 workers) at SF City & County, including the entire benefited staff at the county hospital, SF General. Since that time the city has been in intensive negotiations with the unions (SEIU) that represent these nurses and other city employees. The upshot is that instead of 15,000 layoffs as previously threatened, only 425 people will be laid off. Still unknown is exactly how many of these will be nurses. In return, the union made some bargaining concessions that will save the city some $15 M (not sure of the figure). Some of the giveback will be in the form of deferred raises due us by our existing contract, and more $ will be gained by shifting some of the burden of our pension program, previously borne by the city, to the employee. Meanwhile, a ballot initiative will allow the public to vote on whether even more of pension costs should be shifted to city employees. We are waiting to see the outcome of this initiative, but it appears that the general public is very hostile to what they perceive as over-benefited pension plans.
At least, for the moment, our nursing jobs seem secure!

Well, that is nice, for those who have those jobs. Hope things turn out for all the nurses.
