Hello all, Im a new girl.....
I am a sexual health / Gentio Urinary Medicine nurse from the UK. My primary role is to screen, swab and treat sexually transmitted infections. My husband has got the opportunity to take a new job within the US in 2009-2010, possibily in a permanent position. I would really like to practice within my speciality but I am struggling to know what the appropriate title is for this role as I am starting to look into jobs within the US. I am unsure what it falls under or if this role is still classed as GUM/ sexual health nurse.
Many Many Thanks, Kelly

I honestly do not know the title either! Have you checked into Family Planning, an organization that offers good work benefits for nurses and its specialty is sexual health in our society?

Kelly-
There are a few roles that you could fill here in the U.S. First- You may be able to to gain employment with a Urology office with your experience. Also- You may consider being a community health nurse/women's health nurse which has the umbrella of screening for STD's in the community. These are just a few ideas. I have a friend who is an instructor at Michigan State University who is more versed than I am about the differences in practice between the U.S. and the U.K. You can private message me, and I can provide you with more contact information.
Actually, I would like to speak with you more about your perception of universal health care from the U.K. perspective. So please send a private message when you get the chance :)
Also- you have to remember, when you pass your NCLEX in the U.S. you pretty much can work anywhere you want here after proper orientation.
Do you know where your husband is relocating to? You can start a preliminary job search using Monster.com to start prescreening for jobs.
Best of Luck- Hope to hear from you soon-

Hi Kelly, and welcome to allnurses :welcome:
You might want to have a look in the International Nursing Forum on here for advice about working as a nurse in the US.
Not sure if you know, but there's a retrogression on at the moment, and it's likely to take up to 5 years to get a visa for those who are not already in the 'system'
Suzanne and Silverdragon are the moderators for the International Forum, I'm sure they'll be able to advise you.
Good luck :)

Hi and welcome to the site
A lot depends on which type of visa your husband gets to whether you can work or not. You will need to meet US requirements and pass NCLEX and no reason why you do not start this process now. A lot of information is available in the International forum but suggest starting with the sticky called Primer to working in the USA
Good luck and please don't hesitate to ask questions or send pm's
