Last sunday on my floor I heard that a pt was selling puppies from her room. When asked by the team leader to stop they were ignored. The team leader did nothing more and the saga continued.
Plus staff from other floors where coming to the room to see the puppies and a couple were bought by staff members!!!!
I have to say I was shocked and felt that this was very inappropriate and would have called the house supervisor to deal with the situation.
Was she selling puppies to help out on the medical costs while in the hospital lol? Where does the madness end? And I thought it was crazy when one of my nursing home residents got a cat and is not capable of taking care of him
I've seen facility cats in lots of nursing homes. Some of them are adopted by the staff and some are pets who followed their owners; I'm sure some are also like the one that Tam mentions. In one of them the facility actually had a "care plan" for the kitty posted in the break room to make the state happy, lol. In my experience the staff is more than happy to help take care of them. The thing to remember is that a NH is a person's home and anything we can do to make it more homelike is good for the resident, within reason of course.
But selling puppies out of a hospital room is crossing the line; I would have called the health dept and had them investigate. Good grief.
The sad thing is if she had tried this at the Hilton she would have been kicked out very fast.
So, so true! Hospitals are so busy trying to gain approval of patients no matter the circumstances, that it can be an unsafe environment to everyone. When I think of the allergies that patients and employees can have, not to mention whether or not these animals were in healthy conditions to begin with is frightening. What if they had fleas, and they are known vectors of disease? I mean, did a vet come and clear them? When, does it end??
