Hello All,
I am new to posting to this site, however I have found some very useful and informative info from all the posts that I have read. Now I am in need of assistance. I want to become a PMHNP, I am an Army veteran and I have experience in several areas including psych (both inpatient and outpatient), med-surg, step down units, oncology, rehab, LTAC, SNF just to name a few. Although my passions have always been psych and palliative care, I want to practice as a PMHNP and return to the military or the VA to practice. I am licensed in both Maryland and Michigan and reside here in Maryland. My current dilemma is that most institutions do not accept Maryland residents and this state only has one university in the state that has a PMHNP program and the requirements are ridiculous to say the least. I am considering the following programs, any feedback (from past or present students, or current NP's) on these schools would be greatly appreciated. I want to start in 2018 as early as possible. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
1. Arizona State University
2. University of Colorado
3. Eastern Kentucky University
4. University of Cincinnati
5. University of Virginia
6. Kent State University
7. University of Alabama
8. University of North Carolina
9. University of Southern Indian
10. Rush University
PS I can not PM anyone because I do not have enough postings on this site.

Currently finishing up my 3rd semester at University of Alabama at Birmingham and have been impressed. The course work is intense but manageable working FT so far. The faculty is top notch. I start clinicals in the Fall so may be more pressure and less ability to manage FT employment. You have to go to Birmingham for intensives a few times during the program. The program is ranked best value by US News and have a decent ranking for quality as well (if that matters to you).

Have heard good things about U Colorado (graduated with a second degree BSN from there and was very happy with the quality of education). I believe it's a mostly on campus program though with a few online options for some classes. So you would have to relocate here to do clinical and also come to campus sometimes.
Unfortunately, some universities will not accept Maryland residents because they do not have a partnership with that school. Maryland residents would not be able to participate in the out of state clinical portion of the curriculum with any Maryland preceptors. So we must 1st verify that they school accepts Maryland residents before applying. The University of Maryland is the only PMHNP currently in the state and its now a DNP program that's 5 plus years of full-time study.
I want to thank you all for your informative postings. My plan is to apply to the University of Virginia, University of Alabama, University of Texas Health Science Center @ San Antonio, and the University of Missouri Kansas City all this summer for the PMHNP programs. I'm currently working on my professional statement so that it can be accommodated for each university. I will keep you posted on my progress. Have a very happy nurses week, and thanks again!
Because Maryland BON does not have agreements or partnerships in place with several online universities. It is my understanding that universities have to have a certain number of faculty license in the area plus pay a fee to participate in the multiple state online learning process. Bottom line, It's all about the $$$.

Hey, we should connect! I am working as a FT RN and planning on applying for PMHNP this year. PM me if interested and you have enough posts since I can't post my email here.
Hello, I'll send you a pm once I get the minimum posts required. Sure we can definitely connect. I'm still undecided, but I want a hybrid university with a decent repretation.
That sounds good. I know I'll be looking for an online program only. PM me when you can!

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis is a great option as well. Good luck!
