Seattle-Virginia Mason Panel Interview New Grad

Published

Hi all,

I have an upcoming panel interview for a new grad position with Virginia Mason in Seattle. Does anyone have any tips or have experience with the hiring process/hospital?

Hello, I have a panel interview (Skype) this week as well with Virginia Mason and would love to hear any comments if possible. I also have an upcoming Swedish one, and have had one at Harborview (in person) already. Also, were you hired, and have you had any offers from other local hospitals? I hope it went well!

I got hired through a new grad panel interview, too. It wasn't intimidating at all...

You basically have to sell yourself. My panel consisted of 15 other new grads with 0 experience or non-acute experience (nursing homes, psych). I was a psych nurse so I fell into the latter category. There were 4 spots to fill out of the 15. They ask everybody the same questions and you have to be smart in your response.

I saw people trash talking other candidates by saying things like "while she doesn't have xyz, I have abc..." or saying stupid things like "I have so much to offer..." (to which the panelists replied "can you give specific examples?") or do stupid things like groveling - "Please give me a chance, you won't regret it") or wearing inappropriate attire. One guy wore a dress shirt that was not his size, no tie, untucked. Needless to say, he did not get hired.

The above examples are things to avoid. Tell them your strengths. Be prepared with your answers. Let them know how you really want to be a part of their organization by knowing their mission statement and any community outreach programs that they are particularly proud of. one of the other applicants said she knew their mission statement, they asked her what it was, and she recited it to them word for word. She got one of the spots.

Thank you for the response and advice, the more the better! I have tried to do my research on proper attire, etiquette, and to not "throw anyone under the bus"...so far I have gotten encouraging responses from those that have interviewed me, but it's always uncertain until an offer is in hand. If you are in the August cohort, and I get/accept an offer there, please let me know, as we may be in the same training cohort!

Any insight on what the HR screening interview is like?

I just completed my HR phone interview, and they asked me why I became a nurse, and the big questions were a time you had a bad experience with a patient and what you did to counteract it, and then what was a time where you went above and beyond for a patient. I got a panel interview for December!
