Seattle Children's New Grad RN Residency May 2021

Published

Hello!

Anyone applying for the new grad residency program at Seattle Children's hospital? What units did you select? How many in-person clinical hours were you able to complete due to Covid?

Has anyone been through the residency or interviewed and willing to offer some perspective? The good/bad/ugly and how to prepare for interviews?

Hey! I graduate in May so I will be applying to the August residency cohort and the September OR consortium (praying for OR!)

I spoke to one of the recruiters and one of the managers and they said that they understand that clinical is a mess for nursing students this last year, but they will be looking at what hospital you did your pediatric clinical at and their preference is for as much in person pediatric and/or critical care clinical experience as possible. I think I got 96 hours of peds clinical, I am not sure what the standard is though.

They also said that all the interviews are virtual using webex, and above all else, they are looking for people who are really passionate and want to make Seattle Children's their home and stay there for a long time, not just use it as a stepping stone.

I am not sure if this is still the case, or if this is just for the OR consortium, but when I talked to a recruiter pre-covid, she said that the process is that you will first have a brief phone interview with the recruiter, then if you get past that, you will get an invitation for an interview with the department leadership. I don't know if that is still how it works though since all the interviews are virtual.

Thank you so much for this!

I was only able to get 75 hours, but it was in the PICU, so I'm hoping that counts!  Otherwise, I spent 135 hours doing infection control and Covid protocol teaching at a preschool. While it certainly involved parent and student education, it wasn't hospital/clinic based, so I feel a bit shy about that.

I applied for the May cohort with PICU as my top choice. I live in Washington, but was a graduate from Cali. Not sure how that may help or hinder my candidacy. I'll keep you posted!

Maybe when talking about the 135 hours, emphasize the education with parents and children! Education is a huge role for nurses and that is a great experience! Emphasize the good aspects as much as possible!

I don't think what state you graduated from makes a huge difference. I'm from Cali and going to nursing school in Colorado. One of my instructors in a mock interview even told me to play up the fact that I am coming from out of state and how much I have seen and learned from the different cultures and communities between states. Especially since respecting cultures is one of Seattle Children's main values.

Please keep me updated! I'd love to keep up with the process and if we both get hired it would be nice to connect know someone when I get there LOL ?

Hello everyone, I just found this thread. I also applied for the May 2021 Seattle Children's cohort! Have you guys heard anything back about an interview? I was hopeful that I would get one because even though I only got 56 hours of PEDS clinical due to COVID and I am applying from out of state, I've been an in home child care provider for over 7 years, so I really feel like I have a lot of knowledge and experience to bring to the table for pediatrics, but I can't seem to get an interview anywhere. Has anybody heard anything? I know they say the program is competitive but I'm wondering how competitive like how many people apply vs. how many interview vs. how many get a spot. I hope you guys get a spot, let me know!

Hey!  Nope, I haven't heard anything yet. And I think you just hear silence if you're not selected for an interview... it feels brutal, ha!

I'm also so curious about applicants vs spots. I read on a previous thread from a few years back that they invited 37 people to interview at a previous cohort, but there wasn't any mention of the total offers or number of applicants.

I believe they should have all interview invites out by Friday? I'm not sure what the process is, but starting to feel discouraged!

Knightkr,

Yes, I think you just don't hear anything if you don't get an interview! Makes me feel like there must be hundreds of applicants if they really can't reach out to let you know you haven't been chosen. I was feeling confident because of my childcare background, but I'm also getting discouraged since it has been a few days! And yes I agree that if we're not contacted by Friday, we probably weren't chosen. Are you based out of Seattle? I have never even been, but I am just really passionate about PEDs and trying to get in anywhere I can, and Seattle Children's seems like such a great hospital. Have you applied to any other PEDs residency programs or know of any other good ones? Thanks for starting this thread!

I know what you mean!  I can't say I was SUPER confident but was feeling good about my senior practicum in the PICU, plus I was blessed to have an employee referral from a Neuro NP there.

I am based out of Seattle but just moved back here. I was in California for the last 10 years and it's where I completed my nursing degree.

I love your passion for peds! I think that goes a long way.

The only other place I can think of around here that I know has a good new grad residency program with peds is Harborview.  They have a burn/plastics unit for peds that is renowned. I know their application process for the unit is open now!

Yeah it sounds like you stand a good chance between the PICU practicum and having a referral! I was supposed to have a practicum in PICU, but my school transitioned us to a virtual preceptorship due to COVID which definitely sucks. I was hoping my experience in child care would help me out, but the more I read it seems so competitive and so based on clinical experience which I do not have that much of! Definitely not feeling confident about getting an interview, but keep me updated if you do! Also thanks for the tip about Harborview; I will definitely look into that.

@hmelly anything today?  Silence on my end.

Knightkr,

I haven’t heard anything! If they get hundreds of apps it seems crazy to me that they could get through them in like 4 days, but the email they sent after we sent our apps said they were reviewing from the 15-19! I haven’t fully lost hope, but I’m definitely not holding out for it.

Hi guys! Just got an email about a Zoom interview this Friday! Hope you all did too ?
