Scrubbing the hub

Published

I’m a new nurse, graduated in 2020. I have been in the field only a few months. I recently started a job in a rehabilitation center. I had one patient who had a PICC line with two access points. I went into flush them and after flushing the first one I realized I forgot to clean the hub before the flush. I cleaned the other before flushing it.
It’s been about three days and the patient doesn’t seem to have any signs or symptoms of an infection. But I still feel really horrible & worried I put my patient in danger. I guess I’m asking should I still be worried?

Specializes in Emergency Room, CEN, TCRN.

We cover picc lines with alcohol impregnated caps so you don’t have to wipe them down…. Do you guys not cap central lines?

pretty low chance you caused a clabsi, and now you’ll be sure to swab next time. Don’t let it get you down too much.

As far as I know the line wasn’t capped and so I guess we don’t cap them. I’m don’t know why we wouldn’t considering it’s safest! But it’s definitely something I’ll ask my co-workers! Yeah definitely will learn from this! I never want to forget it again!
Thank you for your help!
