Sorry not related to your question, but was it hard applying to residencies in Texas even though you dont live there? We are considering moving to Texas when im done with schools, but I feel like if i apply to residencies they wont consider me because im out of state. Any advice?

It actually wasn't hard for me at all. My initial license is from Delaware (where I went to school) I moved to Philly and obtained my PA license when I got here since it's not a multi-state license. Unfortunately it was very hard to even get a call back from Philly so since I have family in Texas and it's a multi-state license (my Delaware license is multi) I just applied on a whim to a few hospitals. Every hospital called me back and did interviews and offered me a position, I choose BSW since it paid the best, is a level 1 trauma center, and frankly I think is going to offer me the best experience for my career. I've heard residencies are very hard to get into anywhere you look (they're impossible around Philly without a BSN) but I honestly think that's just based on when you apply and how invested you are in it. BSW says on the website it requires a BSN (I'm an RN) but it was the easiest and most personable interview. I did one interview with the ER manager on a Thursday and was hired by the following Tuesday. (she hadn't even finished all her interviews yet either!)

I think getting into a residency in Texas depends on where the location is of the hospital and how diligent you are with applying and with the initial interviews. From what I've heard any of the cities in Texas are going to be tougher (I applied to Austin as well) but the surrounding areas aren't as hard. My advice would be to do your research first in regards to where you want to live and what you want to do nursing wise. Also, keep in mind that Texas's economy is not the same as other states, certain areas pay less due to no state income tax and high influx of nurses in the area already. For instance, Austin pays their graduate nurses around 6% less than the national average because there's so many people wanting to move to the city where as hospitals up North like in Waco and Temple pay their nurses a little more (but you're not getting the big city feel). Remember though, residencies arent the end all be all to apply to when you get out of school. I choose to apply them because I excelled in the ER during my schooling and most ERs in big hospitals require GNs to go through a program.

Like I said, just do your research, figure out what you ultimately want and go from there, if you want it, you'll get it. Good luck :)

Hi! I'm also applying as an out of state applicant to the Temple, TX location. Just wondering if you'll share about your experience applying and interviewing? Also about how you like the ER so far?

I'm less concerned about pay and benefits and more interested in information on: the layout of the program; classroom education that is included; if mentorship services are included; start date, length of program and end date; if the program culminates in a guaranteed full time position; and if there is an employment contract and for how long (does it include the internship or begin after)?
