The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints founded Webster State University as Weber Stake Academy in 1889. It was named after John Henry Weber, an early American fur trapper. In 1991 the college became Weber State University and Utah's first regional university. It is a public entity.

Weber State University's School of Nursing legacy began as a pilot program of seven programs in 1953. Thirty-six women graduated as the first class with an Associate's Degree in Nursing. With over 900 programs throughout the U.S. today, WSU's mission is to continue their legacy and stay committed to serving Utah's nursing education needs.
