Texas A&M International University, Dr. F. M Canseco School of Nursing was established by the Laredo community to meet the health needs of the city and surrounding border areas.

In 1994, the school launched a baccalaureate completion program (RN/BSN) for Associate Degree Registered Nurses, welcoming its first cohort in January 1995. By May 1996, the RN/BSN program achieved full accreditation from the Texas Board of Nursing. In October 1997, following the graduation of its first student, the program earned a five-year initial accreditation from the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. It has since added several nursing programs to its offerings.
