In 1978, Charlotte County recognized the need for vocational education, prompting Superintendent James Lawless and the school board to envision a vocational school. This led to the establishment of Charlotte Vo-Tech in 1980, under the leadership of Director Tom Wagoner. Initially, the school offered programs like Automotive Mechanics and Cosmetology, serving adults, veterans, and high school students over 16 seeking job skills. The school's expansion continued in the early 1980s with the addition of Port Charlotte and Lemon Bay High Schools.
By 2001, Charlotte Vo-Tech had evolved into Charlotte Technical Center (CTC), incorporating high school students and launching a dual enrollment program. Today, CTC serves nearly 500 high school students and offers over 20 programs, providing industry-standard curriculum and technology through strong partnerships with local businesses.
Hands-On Learning Experience
The program is designed for aspiring licensed practical nurses (LPNs), has received approval from the Florida Board of Nursing, and provides an extensive training curriculum. This curriculum covers all necessary theoretical knowledge and ensures that students gain hands-on experience through practical training sessions held in nearby hospitals. Such immersive training bridges the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. Upon completing the program, graduates will have a robust understanding of nursing principles and practices, preparing them to undertake the state licensure examination.
Mode of Learning
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Program at Charlotte College is an intensive, one-year program running from July to June of the following year.
Additionally, the college offers a Nursing Assistant Program designed to be completed within a year, although specific start and end dates are flexible.
Both programs provide comprehensive education and training in a condensed timeline, equipping students for immediate entry into the healthcare workforce. Admission considerations include course history, grade point average, FSA scores, attendance record, and faculty recommendation.
Admissions at CTC
Admission to the Practical Nursing program is based on meeting certain prerequisites and undergoing various processes. Applicants must be at least 18 years old by the program's start date and possess either a High School Diploma or a GED. Additionally, candidates must pass a background check and a drug screening test. It's important to note that meeting these requirements alone does not ensure automatic admission into the program.
Accreditation
The practical nursing program at CTC is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing (BON) but is not currently accredited by a national nursing accrediting body. Prospective students should be aware that approval by other state BONs may vary, potentially affecting their ability to practice outside of Florida.
