Founded by 19 U.S. governors in 1997, the focus of Western Governors University (WGU) is on the student.

The student who holds down a job, has a family, and other numerous obligations can find what they need at WGU.  Western Governors University offers programs for the adult student with responsibilities to be able to complete, solely online. Programs are competency-based for students to become experts in their field. All programs through Western Governors University are accredited.

The Competency-Based Approach

At Western Governors University the student is taught through online and competency-based learning.

“What does this mean … online and competency-based learning?”

There are no traditional classrooms.  You already know the concept because of your prior education and experience and can complete your assessments easier because you have control over your own education.

Online Classroom with Intense Clinical

Competency through Western Governors University is based on online learning and intensive clinical rotations to solidify your learning. Clinicals are conducted through simulations in the Clinical Simulation Learning Lab.

Innovative Learning Through Clinical Education

State of the art simulations include virtual reality and high fidelity simulations to develop and enhance clinical skills.  The student will rotate through agency-based clinical sites throughout the hospitals and other clinical facilities.

Each student will be assigned an experienced Staff Nurse who will serve as a clinical coach.  This highly skilled and knowledgeable clinical nurse will mentor, supervise and support the student during their clinical site rotation.

There will be requirements throughout the course to complete multiple clinical rotations each year, both in-hospital and community-based.  Some programs have a minimum requirement which includes at least 90 hours of clinical experience in a university-approved and qualified community health setting.

    My Experience

I had an amazing experience with WGU-Texas. We were all introduced to each other during orientation "boot camp" where we tested out of fundamental nursing skills. The tuition costs are all inclusive including e-books. The lectures were done completely online and labs were completed at El Centro College in Dallas, TX. We had a small number of clinical sites due to the program being so new in Dallas but had amazing experiences. I loved the competency-based model and came back to complete my MSN in Leadership and Management and should be done in Dec. 2018.

    About The Staff

The program came with a student mentor who checked in on you every 2-3 weeks and kept you on track. The course mentors are highly educated and know their material.

    My Experience

I was enrolled in the RN to BSN program and recently graduated. During my enrollment, I worked full time, got married, had a lengthy hospitalization and recovery but I was still able to complete my courses on time. The courses seem more intimidating than they are difficult.

    About The Staff

My mentor was great. We spoke weekly and she was always available through email or text. I never had to speak to anyone else other than when I was sending my transcripts in.

    My Experience

I completed my BSN in 2012 with WGU then returned and completed my MSN in 2016. I was able to accelerate my studies (completed BSN in one term and the MSN in two terms) and save money! This university is affordable and everything I learned there I am applying into my nursing practice.

    About The Staff

They have resources for anything you may need. You get a mentor assigned to you, to ensure your success. everybody is invested in your academic success in this school. I loved it! I wish they had a DNP program so I could go back and enroll again!

    Things To Know

High quality education for a very affordable price. Thank you WGU.

    My Experience

I think online school is more challenging than traditional schools. My experience was not the best primarily because of almost daily technical issues. I spent as much time trying to resolve technical IT glitches as I spent on school work. I will add that I was using a Mac computer that seemed to be a frequent interface issue. The other thing with online school is that it’s hard to hold the school responsible for their errors. In other words how do you leverage the school into action when something happens that is their fault and it has resulted in time wasted and frustration? There were plenty of days where I spent my entire planned study time just trying to resolve technical or program issues. When trying to get help you are at the mercy of what ever staff answers the phone or email. Some staff are great and some not so much. I found the most critical piece of online school success is having a really good mentor assigned to you. I had a fantastic mentor named Marcy. If not for her I would have quit online school and returned to traditional school. Because WGU was my only online school experience I’m not in a position to compare virtual schools with each other and can’t say how WGU stacks up with the rest. I can only address my personal experiences with them.
I’m not likely to use WGU to pursue a masters degree.

    About The Staff

Overall the staff did their best to be helpful. There were times however when key staff were not reachable resulting in lost time.

    My Experience

Classwork was difficult, but prepared me well for NCLEX, etc. My clinical rotations had essentially 0 oversight. Cheap school, got me my BSN. Not sure how trying to go to grad school will go with the way their grading system works, but will cross that bridge when I get there.

    About The Staff

Clinical staff seemed to do as little as possible to cover themselves. I was not that impressed with my mentor. Many times I had serious issues and she didn't even respond to my emails. What was the point of our connection then? I will say the majority of my lab instructors were pretty great. A lot of them went above and beyond to get us resources and find out answers to a lot of questions. Lab was very valuable to me considering we did not have traditional classroom time.

    My Experience

I'm very happy with WGU - completed my BSN through them, now working on a MSN-Ed. I've managed to balance school, work, and a personal life.

    About The Staff

My student mentors have meant the world to me. My BSN mentor saw me through the loss of my husband, and all the changes that came after that. She was truly supportive and inspirational. She made the difference between my ability to complete my degree, and failure.

    My Experience

I wish I had known about WGU for my RN to BSN but am thankful I found out for my BSN to MSN. Not having to live by a structured course timeline or silly discussion posts puts WGU high up above most other online schools...along with being a fully accredited and non-profit school that provides a well rounded education at an affordable price with letting the student maintain autonomy on their coursework. The only frustration I have had (and minimal at that) has been not being clear on a few of the rubrics expectations. I work nights so it can be a challenge to try and reach out to staff to clarify at 4 am :-).

    About The Staff

So far, and I almost done with my degree mind you, I have only come across extremely polite, helpful, and caring staff. My student mentor is one in a million and my course mentors have been great as well.

    Things To Know

    Thank you WGU!!!
