To those with stock Epi:

Were you the ones who implemented this in your school? I'd really love to get it started on my home campus (I'm not at my other 2 campuses enough to have it there, unfortunately) but I'm really not sure where to start with it. I realize I'll need standing orders and new policies etc. etc. Just curious to know what step 1 is!

That's a bummer, OD. Oddly enough, I don't think that will be terribly difficult on my end. I have a physician parent that is super happy to help where they can. I'm just not sure how to get the ball rolling. My admin is on board with it but they have left it to me to get worked out

Not sure where you are, but you need to make sure your state allows for MDs to Rx epi without it being for a specific patient; Then you would definitely need to write up a policy and have it approved by the school board/committee/governing board. From there, you would need MD standing orders and of course, the Rx. You should be careful with your policy-writing however, since you won't have the epi at those locations...

I can send you our epi policy/order form if you think it would be helpful! We had it in place here for many years, but we also have a physician on retainer for such orders.

I was not the one who started it at my school. We have a food allergy liason (one of my parents) who is behind us having stock epipens and auvi-q's. This is my first year at this school. I will admit it is nice to be able to send an epipen on a field trip as a just in case.

Does your nursing supervisor support you? Is someone at the district willing to fund the whateveritcosts to have a physician sign the orders? Do you have a physician working with the school anyway - like a doctor who oversees the concussion protocols? Start there, or check with your county Medical Society if you have one. I used the words "only a matter of time before a student dies of something preventable" for two years before we moved that direction. Good luck!

it's state law here to maintain it. That was passed a few years ago, but i think most schools had it in place before then
