Sore Hands !

  1. Just wondering what you school nurses do for painful cracked fingertips from frequent handwashing ? The corners of my fingertips crack and bleed and they never seem to heal. Any suggestions ???

    Thanks !

    I have the same porblems
There are several but here are a few things that have worked for me:
Avon Silicone Glove lotion. Goes on smooth, non greasy and can still feel it after washing hands
    Aveeno 24 hour moisture lotin
For those cracks I use NuSkin (I think this is the name) liquid bandage which seals it crack and helps minimize the pain
    Hope these help

I use aquaphor also works well on chapped lips.

However, have you considered switching to an alcohol based product like prevacare? It can be less drying.

    Good luck

Chapstick the cracks (with a new chapstick-not one you used already on your lips!)

I use the bath and bodyworks antibacterial soaps and lotions...they are mild and smell nice too! not greasy or sticky, either (aound like a commercial, dont i)

I have seen cream based antibacterial hand lotions rather then the gel type. I forget the brand but I'll check into it for you...that way you have the best of both worlds...lotion and antibacterial...

I am not sure you are not already doing this, and I hope I don't sound stupid because I am not giving you a specific name brand. But, when I was having that problem, I just carried a small Wal-Mart lotion in my scrub pocket and EVERYTIME I washed my hands, I would lather up. You go through a lot of lotion, but at least your hands will stop hurting. Since you are bleeding from the cracks, you might want to use the advice of the previous replies, my advice is more for long term care, once your skin heals.

Thanks to everyone for the helpful advice on sore cracked fingertips.
I also got some good advice from a hairdresser friend. She uses A&D ointment
on her cracked fingertip. Yes, sounds strange, seeing as how it is used on baby's bottoms for diaper rash...but it does make sense ! At night when I go to bed I apply the A&D to my fingertips and cover them each with a bandaid, and yes it has helped a lot. It must have healing properties in it, because the fissures are closing up. The pain is going away ! During the day I use the Nutrogena Norwegian Hand Formula as Martha Bergren suggested (thanks Martha !) and it is wonderful indeed. Try it for your "nurses" hands ! We all wash them so many times that we need hand therapy. Hope this help ladies !
