Nope - at least when I was the school nurse. Summers for nurse and teachers was time off and we looked forward to it.

Specializes in School Nursing.

We get summers off, but if one of our diabetics or other child attends summer classes or energy express, we are able to bid on the job...The one for this summer is for 10 hours per week, from 8 am to 1 pm....Not sure how the math works there! LOL.....Or else it's for breakfast and lunch, and drive back and forth home between meals.....

I am a College Health Nurse so I work year round. Some of the Nurses in other areas work either year round, 11 months or 10 months out of the year. It depends on the area your are working in.

Specializes in Pediatrics, school nursing.

We have the option to work summer school for additional pay, but I choose not to. My summers are devoted to driving my children around, getting my house in order, reading as much as possible, and this summer, trying to get my home business off the ground. I do usually return to school a week or so before I have to, to have uninterrupted time to verify vaccines on students who enroll over the summer, and contact parents of students with serious health conditions to try to obtain their care plan. This year, my clinic is being used all summer long for different programs at my school, so I am not sure I'll be able to go back early.

Usually do summer school if it's offered. Also do some weekend shifts throughout the year and pick up more shifts during the summer on the Psych unit.
