Pet Peeve Friday

Let's vent a bit. I'm having trouble readjusting to reality after a wonderful Spring Break and am finding my patience wearing down a little quicker than the school year.

I'll start:

Cell phone voice mail that's either not set up or is full. I don't get people that do this... How are you not accessible when you're away from your kids in case of emergency?

When I am trying to eat in my locked office and the main office calls and says "are you at lunch?" Because yea I haven't tried to take an uninterrupted lunch at the same time everyday for the past 7 months but thanks for interrupting me...again. Or that is exactly when the parent I've been trying to reach for 2 hours finally calls back.

Do you work in a private or military school?

I wondered this, too. I had no idea young men weren't allowed to wear earrings, or to have long hair! I would guess it must be a millitary school...

Moms who think that it is totally appropriate for their daughters cleavage to be all out on display because we should not be sexualizing our kids by commenting on it or asking them to cover up and boys need to behave themselves and not look...

One in particular is a BIG girl and I get that mom is trying to minimize body images issues...HOWEVER....

This weeks pet peeve is the almost hourly handful of kids sent to my office because they are "hungry". Their passes even request "crackers".... I guess I should start asking the teachers for supplies they purchase throughout the day... I go through boxes of saltines like crazy. I am not a drive through!

When I make a remark, and the person I said it to just stands there and looks at me like I was reading to them from a 1952 Chinese Encyclopedia.

:banghead:

We had a child throwing up for 2 hours and could not get a hold of her mother. The only other emergency contact was her aunt who could not come get her. When we finallly got a hold of mom she yelled at my health aide for calling her too much. WTH?!?

This mother needs a hysterectomy. Or a mental health exam. There is some serious stress in her life and in the life of her family. Any thought re: child abuse/neglect? Need f/u with CPS?

I'm not a school nurse, but my pet peeve is fellow nurses who come to you with "room XXX said you didn't look very happy and didn't talk to her very nicely when he asked for Dilaudid and Ativan at that same time." Especially after that same nurse has been complaining about having to go into that patient's room every hour to give her something PRN pain/anxiety medication related. HELLO! I went into that room cause you asked me for help! I educated your patient and updated the white board with the appropriate times. Of course they didn't like it. However, I wasn't mean about it. I can't help that I suffer from resting witch face or that you fell for the "whoa is me" charade. How about you back up your fellow nurse once and a while!

OMG - the boys that cannot go to the bathroom with others - EVERY.SINGLE.YEAR.

Yes!!!! I will not send you home to go poop! You are about to go into the real world and can't leave your job to go home. What's bad is I had a 3rd-4th grader have this issue. Mom said he went to youth camp and did not poop all week.

Dress codes...aaargh!

I'm at a Christian private school and dress codes are written for male and female students but I have NEVER had a male student sent down for breaking dress code. EVER. Even though I've seen plenty of males breaking dress code. But, girls? Girls are sent down on the daily for their skort being too short. My own daughter was sent down on "dress as you like day" (middle school students with a conduct grade of 100 are given one day per term to dress as they like as long as they adhere to modesty guidelines) for breaking modesty code. She was told her shorts weren't long enough. I literally laughed aloud although her eyes were brimming with tears because the poor kid would rather die than break a rule. Bless her.

I marched her to the front office and confirmed with the principal that she was within modesty guidelines..she was. My kid is that only middle school girl who still wears a one piece swimsuit, the only volleyball player who pulls her spandex to her knees while everyone else pulls them up to reveal butt cheeks...she's literally the most modest kid I've ever known. I try to convince her every year to buy a bikini, telling her someday she won't have this slamming body and she'll wish she'd worn one while she could.:D Grandma bikinis are for old chicks like me.

My point is that, while I like a lot of what is taught at this school, I feel like the dress code message is all wrong. Only girls are pulled in regards to improper dress. I think this happens at more schools than just mine.

When you interrupt a girl's school day to force her to change clothes or to send her home because her shorts are too short or her bra straps are visible, you are telling her that hiding her body is more important than her education. You are telling her that making sure the boys have a distraction-free learning environment is more important than her education. You are telling her that boys are more entitled to an education than she is.

Sooo I guess it is ok for them to show a TON of cleavage? Like, if measured, 6 or 7 inches of the upper breast exposed?

I have a hard time agreeing with that. Totally inappropriate in the work world, why is it ok now?

Enforce a Mandatory Naked Day at all schools. The trauma of that day should suffice to many as a good reason to NOT "let it alllll hand out!"

We don't have cleavage issues. We have a required polo that doesn't unbutton far enough to allow cleavage so that's not an issue.

Skorts being too short is our issue. The uniform policy for both boys and girls is that the skort or shorts length cannot be more than 3" above the knee. I see boys breaking this policy everyday but are they sent to me or the front office? Nope. But girls are sent to me every.single.day without fail. Double standard.

As a sexual assault survivor myself, I refuse to let my daughter be told that SHE is at fault if she is ever assaulted or raped. It's not an okay message to send girls. Short skirts don't cause rape. Rapists cause rape. I'm sick of girls getting the message that THEY are at fault for the disgusting thoughts in mens' heads.
