School nursing is appealing as i would be off in the summers with my kids, but since I would be working roughly the same hours as my kids I feel like i would need morning childcare to get them off to school and after school childcare to get them home.

is that what you guys do? Am I

Missing something?

thank you!

(if I wasn't in NJ I would just apply and try it out, but I need a certification that costs roughly $12k to get so I want to be sure I've thought it thru before I take the plunge!)

I work in the same school as them. Same hours until middle school. They can catch the bus here at the elementary school where I work.

My kids go to the same school as I work in. My younger 2 just come to work with me, then come to my office when they are done. They hang around, play outside, eat a snack, etc. for the 1/2 hour I work after school. My older son drives himself as he has sports practices after school.

personally, i got lucky and ended up working in the same school as my spawn. but before i ended up with my job here I was fully prepared to send her to the local contracted daycare for morning care, which would have probably irritated me to have dropped her but paying the money for like 20 minutes of care but then i would have eventually gotten wise and would have dragged out butts out of bed a half hour earlier and hit the gym on the way to work.

If you're not ready to take the full on plunge, you can always sign on with a school as a sub nurse as they're always looking. I know i'm always looking - and i'm in NJ ;)

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Is it easy to get a substitute school nurse certification? Do I do this by county or is it statewide?

And I would LOVE to sub for you! I'm in Union County! ;-)

Small rural community. My school is THE ONLY school in the town. Easy, peasy :)

Its by county. You can apply at a school for a sub position (they are always looking) and the board secretary usually takes care of it. You'll have to pay for fingerprints then wait for board approval. Sub cents are good for 5 years. Once you have it its good anywhere in the county. You could then apply at any school in the county and give them a copy of the cert, prints, background etc.

My hubby gets the kiddos off to school and I pay a neighbor teen to get my 10 year old off the bus and watch him until I get home (my 12 year old walks home and is okay for the 20-30 minutes alone.. The school nurses at my kids school have been there for years.. I don't see either position opening for me while they're in school.

I work at the same school my kids attend. If they were younger I would utilize the before school program because I start an hour or so before the elementary schools start.
