LPN - School Nurses ???

In Pennsylvania you need a BSN + a school nurse certification to be a school nurse. When I worked with my diploma, I was considered a "nurses aid" LPN's fall in that category too. It's a great way for the schools to get all our skills and pay us little.

I am an LPN but in my county I can only work as a CRA (Clinic Room Aid). This is not using my license. Only an Public Health RN can be a school nurse in Fairfax County, VA.

I was just hired as an LPN to be the school nurse for our elementary and high school. I will work under a RN that is there 3 days a week. I am looking forward to August! Any insight to what lies ahead will be greatly appreciated. :nurse:

ok..... any insite into this????? I live in PA.... I cannot work in our district as an LPN, but I CAN be the camp nurse for our 6th graders.... they are at camp for 2 and a half days..... they stay overnight.

I do have contact info for the district RN in charge, and BTW.... I love it!!! But it doesn't make sense....

Different states have different laws. In PA, you have to have your BSN and then your school nurse certification from the department of education to be called a "School Nurse" If you have your RN or LPN you can work in the school but are not considered a nurse. You are a health aide. Not sure what the exact reasoning is but it works out good for the school districts. They get a licensed nurse for the pay of an aid...
