I have had parents do an exemption because they are too lazy to track down their kids prior shot records or make appt to get 7th grade requirements Then, they get all mad at me 2 years later when I tell them I need a new form. I am in Texas, wish it was harder to get an exemption by just requesting online.I wish you had to go to an hour long education session or something before they would let you file!!

Not quite an hour long class but in IL, a few years ago they started requiring a form that needs to be signed by parent and doctor saying that the risks have been explained.

I'm in Texas too!! And I agree. It's entirely tooooooo easy to get an exemption. I LOVE the idea of making them go to an education class before obtaining one. We should get to work on getting that passed!

AYE! And they'd have to submit their certificate of completion along with the Affidavit.

I'm in California and we no longer accept personal or religious exemption, only medical exemption. Granted there are some doctors that hand out exemptions like candy, but we turn their names in to the state. The only way to get out of immunizations (beside medical) is to homeschool. The law applies to all schools public and private.

When did CA stop with religious exemption? I thought that was impossible for religious discrimination! :hm:

Exemption to School Immunizations

Starting in 2016, SB 277 goes into effect, and personal belief exemptions will no longer be an option. This bill removes exemptions for immunizations except for medical reasons verified in writing by a doctor.

•No longer permits immunization exemptions based on personal beliefs for children in child care and public and private schools;

•Permits personal belief exemptions submitted before January 1, 2016 to remain valid until a pupil reaches kindergarten or 7th grade;

Believe it or not my state of MS was one of the first along with California to get rid of the religious exemption. Mississippi is backwards in a lot of ways but other states should look at our vaccination laws. Here you must get an exemption from a medical doctor. It can not be a nurse practitioner or physicians asst. And it then goes to the state and they have to approve it. I saw one child go thru this process when I worked at the health dept. They said she was allergic to pertussis but had really no information as to if it was true. They saw 3 doctors in town and they would not sign the form. They ended up giving her the vaccine in a controlled setting and we gave her the shot record for school so most drs take it pretty serious around here.

One thing that boggled my mind when I worked at the health dept. was the parents that vaccinated their older children but would refuse to vaccinate the younger children. They would even homeschool them as opposed to getting the shots. I have two children I can not fathom protecting one and not the other. No matter what side of the debate you are on how could you not do the same for all your children?
