The schedule. The autonomy. The students and relationships you form over the years you spend together. Seeing newly diagnosed students go from terrified to owning their diagnosis. By far the most rewarding job I've had.

When I do work with doctors or their offices, the relationship is collaborative and cordial (and focused and brief). I am no longer lifting 300-pound patients, hanging blood, or chasing communicable disease across two counties. And rarely do I take home work with me - on the way home from the hospital I would often second guess or remember something I forgot to do. I still second-guess but it's rarely needed.

Every day is "bring your kids to work day" for me! I get to see my 3 kids throughout the day and be here for them if they need anything. Also getting close to many of the other kids here. The hours and schedule can't be beat. The staff here are fun to work with. The work keeps me busy, but its not back breaking, heavy stuff. Best job I ever had!

I really like and truly appreciate a lot of things about my job. I look forward to going to work. Most days it doesn't feel like a job in the general sense of the word. Being on the same schedule as my Hubs, kids and now my 1st grandsweetie...He loves riding to and from school with "Granny". I get the feeling from his fellow Kindergarteners that they think he is pretty lucky to have his Granny be the nurse. Watching my students grow and learn and following them through school and being able to help them with health issues (big and small), as well as helping them with emotional pain. My heart flutters when the younger ones look at me with sparkles in their eyes like they think the Nurse is extra special and some kind of a Hero. Relationships I have developed with teachers and staff through the years to last a lifetime. There are a couple of people that I worked with at my first school 20 years ago that still call me "Nursey" when I see them.

I worked in a hospital for a few months right out of college- It didn't take me long to decide that my job will never, never, ever interrupt my family time. I was blessed with a Home Health job very quickly, I absolutely loved that job and my patients, there are still some that are near and dear to my heart. When my kids got in school, I was able to be the 1st school nurse in my hometown, to be with them. The rest is history, I am still in School Nursing.

One thing about my job that is somewhat unique, is that I cover 3 small rural districts (4 buildings). I must say, this was pretty challenging at first. But, love it. There is something really refreshing about not having to go to the same office/building/people e.v.e.r.y. day. I have to be very organized to get it all done.

This message board and a list serve for Missouri School Nurses are my lifelines. We also have an amazing State School Nurse Consultant that always takes good care of us and Show-Me-Vax (the state immunization registry)....2 more of my lifelines that make my job much easier.

My son used to say it was cool. He had his own ATM, Ask the Mom!!! $$ was the most common!
