Help!
I am looking for advise. I work in a unionized hospital where scheduling is based solely on a seniority basis. We put our schedules into the scheduling system on the computer and that is that. When I first started I needed off one weekend for a special family event but was told that was not doable because too many people above me did not schedule themselves for that weekend so I got put on so I had to work.
Fast forward to present day and I finally have people under me in seniority so I can kind of get the schedule that I want. On the tentative schedule I was scheduled for a weekend in early December and was off the weekend after Christmas, which happened to be the day after Christmas. Now on the new final schedule that is posted the weekends that I was supposed to work in early December and the weekend after Christmas were swapped with someone with less seniority than me! She is now off the weekend after Christmas and I am scheduled to work!! She is also off Christmas Eve when I am scheduled to work. Seniority in the scheduling was definitely broke, which breaks union contract and hospital policy.
I need advise on how I should go about this situation. Should I talk to my boss? Talk to the union?
Thanks in advance!

I would talk to the person that finalizes the schedule, then go to the union if necessary.

*Edit: I re-read the post. It sounds like the tentative schedule showed one thing and the finalized showed another. Definitely take that to the scheduling person/union rep to find out why the change was made.
I don't have experience with unions and contracts, but if there is a rule that no one is allowed to "swap" or switch shifts, then I would say that the rule has been broken. If there isn't a rule about that specifically, then you may have just missed out on the opportunity to switch shifts with someone at the previous time in order to get time off for your event.
Agree with PP. Clarify/ask questions to the schedule person, then union rep.
