Santa Cruz and sorrounding

Published

I am a new grad BSN, RN and live in Santa Cruz. Does anyone know of any potential new grad opportunities in the area now or in the near future?! It's terrible out there. Thanks!

I could never find anything around there. As a minimum look in San Jose. Try Salinas Valley Memorial or Natividad. I doubt CHOMP would have anything, they never do. Try Watsonville. Another option is Soledad State prison. Good luck.

Salinas Valley isn't hiring because I have a friend there, they're on a hiring freeze when it comes to new grads. Natividad already have their new grad program started. CHOMP just layed off a lot of employees, and Watsonville already hired their new grads. Rumor has it that those positions were already taken before they even hit the website. Soledad State Prison, I didn't know they had a new grad program.

Soledad State Prison, according to the job bulletins, considers new grads for hire. On occasion, licensees throughout the state might get mailings to work in the state prison system. It is worth a look.

I am an experienced nurse who lives in Aptos and I worked for Dominican Hospital for almost 6 years. In 2008, we moved to Sacramento. Long story short, we moved back from Sacamento and Dominican has been on a hiring freeze ever since. I haven't checked in with them for 6 months because I found a good job over the hill so maybe things are different now...Anyways, wishing you the best! It's tough right now but hang in there...things will eventually change, they always do in nursing!

thanks for the post and encouragement. do you know anything about Dominican selecting cabrillo new grads over other new grads? it's a rumor I've heard and it makes me uneasy.

One of my classmates from SJSU was employed by Dominican after she did a clinical there.

Back in December I went to a job fair where there were two recruiters from the prison system. After the song-and-dance I asked, "Are you hiring new grads right now? I just applied to 6 prisons for posted openings... do I have a shot?"

He responded, "We do hire new grads sometimes."

"Are you hiring them now?" I asked.

"We do hire them," he said.

"But in the present situation... are you hiring new grads?" I persisted.

"We have...," he said.

"Honestly, I have no chance, do I?" I said.

With a pained look on his face he said quietly, "No. You have no chance. I'm sorry."

I haven't heard back from any of them. I wouldn't put much hope in the prison system right now.

Somehow I find myself liking this recruiter. Thanks for this story.

I liked him, too. I thanked him for his candor and honesty. He was a nurse... I think he really understood my frustration and was genuinely sympathetic.

What happened is a shame. Father of one of my daughter's high school friends (LVN), worked there for years, made a ton of money with the overtime, and enjoyed the work immensely.
