Samuel Merritt ABSN Summer 2012

Published

Hi everyone! :nurse:

So, the applications are due today (September 1st) for summer admission to ABSN program at Samuel Merritt. How does everyone feel about their application??  What campus did you apply to?

@ Tammy

What is the exact max amount can we receive from fed loans?

I have no idea because they're late with my financial aid packet.. but when I spoke to someone on the phone, she mentioned that I'm getting about 6k for each payment that needs to be made.. and there will be 3 payments so I'm assuming 18k. I don't know the exact amount, sorry. I was really hoping for more though.

Is anyone else at this Mentoring in Medicine conference? It's supposed to be about financing...school stuff! I'll let you know what I find out. Katie, I can't believe we'll probably be getting a call next week! Now all of a sudden the MAGNITUDE of sixty...thousand...dollars is starting to set in. I'm terrified! Also, is anyone else doing the BLS on Wednesday at SMU?

Where did you find out about these events aluflow? I've never heard of them, but would have been interested in going.

Hiyeeeee! Yeah aluflow, where are you getting all these events from? I would certainly attend some if I knew about them.... Is it through SMU? Do you really think we will be getting acceptance notifications soon? I figured that since people had already turned in their deposits ($350 I think) that we might not hear anything for a while. I thought that we might have to wait for people to exhaust all their possible financial sources before they decline their spot. But I hope you are right!!!

Can someone who has already been accepted to Oakland post the dates of orientation or any other important upcoming dates that aluflow and I might have access to? If you want you can email PM me or I can give you my email. I don't have access to any info since I haven't been accepted yet.

Thanks, hope you all have a great weekend!

Oh! There was a flyer at Merritt College (where I basically live) and I...took it. It was $5 to sign up for a "Mentoring in Medicine" conference that more or less happened to be at SMU. Most of the people there were pre-med (I think I was one of two nursing people!) and the conference was really focused on the process of becoming a PA or a doctor by way of inspiring stories and inspiring people. SMU had an information desk set up, as did UCSF and Kaiser, etc. And guess who I met at the information desk! -------! You guys - she was so, so, so nice. I've heard that she's been with SMU for forever, and it's just so obvious why. She really is the sweetest, most positive person, and you can tell that in just a few minutes. She recognized my name when I told her she'd been emailing me this week, and while she was a bit vague on likelihood, etc etc (my gosh what we all keep talking about :)), she seemed to think the top five had a good chance. There was another woman working at the desk who I talked with a bit more and who was also just awesome (we're going to such a great school ;)) and again, while I wasn't really pushing for answers or information or anything, I have a vague memory of her saying that at this point last year, she was pretty sure the top five or so on the waiting list got in. Or something. My gosh I'm so sorry I wasn't being a good sleuth! I wasn't really looking for information about getting in, etc. so I don't remember a lot of what was said when they heard where I was on the wait-list.

What we also talked about, were the other cohorts! People who got on the waiting list basically got a "yes"!! If there's no room in the May cohort, then there's June! And if not June, November! Then January, then etc. Both women I met projected the idea that they really want wait-list people to go to Samuel Merritt, and being put on a waiting list is basically them saying 'we will find a place for you'! At least that's the impression I got, and I'm happy with that.

As far as the financial aid element of the conference, there wasn't a whole lot to it. There was a guy from Morgan Stanley there, basically begging us to start putting money away while we're young no matter who we do it with, and a woman from the financial planning department of UCSF, who begged us not to borrow any more money than we absolutely need, and to please please please live like a student while you're a student. All the other information she gave was either easily found on the internet or specific to UCSF.

Hope that makes some people feel better! Katie, I just have a really good feeling :) Two weeks ago we were numbers 10 and 11. A week ago we were 5 and 6. Now we're 2 and 3! If you're not my study buddy in school I'm going to have to go abduct tamosaur

Oh! And the BLS is the CPR training for health professionals whatnot we have to do. I looked online and found one that worked for me, and it's from 10-2 on Wednesday at (coincidentally) SMU. I'm just getting ready...in case :specs:

WOW aluflow!!!! You sure remembered a lot! Thank you so much for reporting back to us. I think if I had to be the one to report back, you guys would not be getting much info lol.

Too bad that it's too late for us to save money during our childhood to prepare for this program lol.

You guys should definitely start preparing by doing the BLS, getting your physical exams and immunization data in order, and looking at different financing options. I really wish I had more time to get everything done but it's doable. I just hope that I have time before the program starts to relax.

Even though we probably won't be in the same cohort, I'm still so happy for us all! I don't know if all the programs have the same curriculum at the same time but since mine will be ahead, maybe I could offer any insight or anything that could help you be prepared for what to expect.

I've registered for classes and it looks like I'll be taking 2 classes and one lab from 4/23 to 5/23. They're Intro to nursing & the healthcare, health assessment, and health assessment lab.

After that it'll be health assessment II & lab, and Managing care of Adults 1 clinical from 5/14 to 7/1.

Then it's healthy aging, and managing care of adults 2 clinical from 7/9 to 8/12 .

I wonder if all the campuses will start with those same classes?

I didn't know we'd be doing clinicals so soon!

HI B,

Thank you for sending me this email. I forwarded it to my director. You know, people are right. This process this time around has been too long. Also, the changes back and forth were upsetting. In fact, I am hoping that this email will push some helpful decisions for all of us.

Thank you

E

Hi everyone, I'm a current student at the san mateo campus. Feel free to message me with any questions you may have. I haven't looked through the whole thread but for those offered a spot in the san mateo cohort, take it! The staff at this campus is wonderful.

Oakland deposits were due March 16th right?? So we might see some movement on the wait-list today?

Hey, also, regarding financial aid, does anyone know how the EFC expected family contribution works? I am confused by this concept...
