I just got accepted to Hopkins for their accelerated BSN to FNP program and am looking for housing starting June 2005. I am from San Francisco, CA and I was wondering what neighborhoods people would recommend living in. I'm looking for a place not far from JHU campus (either the Homewood campus) or near the Medical school (I hear the neighborhood's not safe there). So do any of you have opinions about Charles Village, Fells Point, or the Wyman Park area? I'm looking for a 1 BR apt, but would like to pay no more than $600 to $650/mo. If you know of special apt complex names or areas I should look at, I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Hi! All 3 areas you mentioned are great. However, you may not find what you want in that price range. You may want to consider getting a two bedroom with a roommate to keep the price down. Three years ago I was looking for a one bedroom in Charles Village in that price range and I didn't have much luck. (I ended up buying a house instead.)
You're right about the area around the medical campus--it's not safe at all. There is a shuttle between the Homewood campus and the medical campus that you can take if you won't have a car. Oh, and you may want to look into Hampden, as well. It's behind the Homewood campus, and may be cheaper than Charles Village.

Mt. Vernon: You don't need a car, there is shuttle service to the school, you can walk to the Harbor, Little Italy, etc. Safe place, friendly people. It has the best bars and restaurants without all of the tourists. Plus, it is in walking distance from many of the clinical sites. You can find some apts in converted houses for around that price. But you won't find a complex in the area that rents that cheap. I paid $900 for my studio but it was a controlled access building and well worth every penny. Check out CraigsList for cheap rent. I woudn't bother looking at Fells. No transportation. Many people walk to school from there but you will have to walk through the projects on your way. Not scary in daylight but it can get a little sketchy after 5 or 6. If you have any questions PM me.
