RNs eat their young... Not at my unit

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to say that when I was in the RN program I was really worried about becoming a new RN one day... I have heard that RNs eat their young so many times and that as a new RN you will be taken advantage of. Well, I guess I was lucky to have the best co workers every! My preceptor became like a second mother to me and she still helps me a bunch even though I am already on my own. There is another RN who always asks me if I am caught up with charting and if I am not, what I need her to do for me so I can chart... Whenever I need something there is always someone to help me either by going to the pt's room with me or explaining to me how I should do smth...

I strongly believe that when you a new graduate RN you should treat your coworkers like you want them to treat you... I remember when I still was in orientation, I saw that the other RN was very busy and I helped her... sure enough she always helps me now when I need it... When I have a minute I help other RNs too and do not just expect everyone to help me all the time because I am new...

I :redbeathe my co workers... They are one of the main reasons why I like coming to work...

I am very nice to my coworkers and I help them out when I can, but there is one nurse no matter what I do she treats me like dirt. I feel like she HATES me.

I just stay out of her way, so I say you are very lucky that you got a very good team with you.

Sometimes those type of nurses or whatever have that nasty spirit ingrained into their being.........but they don't discourage me cause everyone is entitled to their bad day or attitude.

Olli- my unit is the same way. My charge nurse has got my back and the other nurses are constantly asking if I need help. It is true, there is always going to be at least one nurse that takes advantage of others but I just keep paying it forward. It makes for a lovely environment to work in.

I work on an absolutely wonderful unit as well! If it wasn't for my coworkers I wouldn't still be at my job. We truly have each others backs and it's fantastic :)

I am thankful everyday to work where I do.

I hate to say it but I think the Management is eating their RN's more than we are eating our own........I love teaching new skills to younger nurses. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions I may be able to help you with........and good luck...........just remember we are here for the patients they are the ones who are looking for us to make them well....we are the ones who know what is going on with them since we are there 24/7, and remember as a nurse "to be right is only half the battle to convince the physician is more difficult."

I love my job, my manager and my co workers. Perhaps it has something to do with getting old but stuff just does not bother me like it used to.

That's really great... props to you (and your co-workers) for having such wonderful attitudes.

I really really love when people get along, and I think I could work anywhere or do almost anything as long as I'm doing it with fantastic people.

its nice to see a positive post for a change. at least other people going into nursing can see that all nurses aren't backstabbing, unsupportive people out to make each other miserable. I also work with great nurses that jump in to help no matter what.

Pass it on forward. Let your co-workers know.

Trust me, it helps :)

Good to hear of another unit like that! My unit has been great as a new grad--the ADON, DON, unit manager, etc are constantly on the floor asking me if I am doing ok. The other nurses I work with are fabulous, and I never feel uncomfortable asking for help if I don't know how to do something.
