RN waitlist in BC? Where do I start?

Published

Hello fellow nurses!

I'm currently an LPN looking to begin my prereqs to apply for the RN program. I'm looking at 3 different schools - ideally Douglas College but am also looking at BCIT and Langara. Any advice on where to begin? I have an appt with an advisor at Douglas but not for a couple more weeks and I'm just hoping to get an idea of where to start. I pretty much have to start at square 1 and take all the prereqs like English and Math so I know it's a long road ahead. I don't think any of my LPN courses transfer as they were program specific. Any advice? If you are in either school, how long did you have to wait to get in after you met all requirements?

TIA :)

I've been an RN for almost 2.5 years now, but I was essentially in the same boat in 2005. I'm a second career nurse. I spent 8 months taking prerequisites for my BSN program while working full time, and then 4 years at school. Returning to school is not easy, but it's not meant to be easy, or everyone would be doing the same thing. The time you're spending is worthwhile and the time flies by.

You can bridge through OK UBC and get admittance to second year. There are still several pre-reqs but lots can be done online.

Thanks for your replies :)

I'd love to be able to bridge in but moving to the Okanagan is not an option for me as I have a young family. I was talking to someone today who said she did some of her prereqs online but the school she took them from no longer offers the courses and I can't seem to find any that would transfer to Douglas that are available online. I just took a look at the waitlist for the first chunk of prereqs and there are 25-35 ppl on each list for each course waiting to take it! I doubt I'll be able to this semester :(

Why don't you take a peri op course while you are waiting to do your RN, we have a few LPN's who took the course and are great assets to our team.. it will change your scope of practice

Right now I'm just trying to focus on getting my prereqs to apply for the RN program - I still have a long road ahead to even apply! Once I've completed them and am on the waitlist I may look into other courses to bump up my LPN scope :)
