RN vs WHNP vs OBGYN Nurse

Published

I am a senior in high school and will graduate Spring of 2014. I am wondering which level of nursing to go into and how it all works. I know I want to work in obstetrics and am particularly interested in infertility. I was thinking getting my RN and then (as I understood) I just find a job in obstetrics? But now looking further, I found OBGYN nursing and Women's Health Nurse Practitioner. Pros and cons for WHNP vs RN? I really don't know much about the levels of nursing and schooling for them and their roles within their jobs. Basically I'm looking for information on the different levels and then about specializing in women's health/ obstetrics.

Thank you!!

I am also wondering about becoming a lactation consultant!

Do all of them. Get your bsn, then work as an RN in mother baby or L&D, get enough work experience and take the classes required and then take your lactation consultant exam, then if you feel the urge to spend another $30,000, get your WHNP. None are mutually exclusive. If you do some googling you'll find info on all of those. Good luck, I love working ob/gyn.
