Howdy. Have a valid RN licence in Virginia....been out of nursing for a bit and moving to Maryland, but still close to the DC Area. Can anyone recommend a RN refresher class? And what should one be looking for in a refresher class? TY in advance

I wish I could help you. I took the Kane Refresher course in Florida and it only covered accu checks and IV's for clinical. I still feel like I have my assessment skills for med-surg, but since I have been out for some time (make that 7 years due to cochlear implants) I cannot get back into a hospital and I REALLY hate LTC. I don't know what to do either. If you get any ideas, please pass them on! Good Luck and Merry Christmas!!
George mason I believe has one as well so does NOVA..where I got my ADN
Office of Academic Outreach - College of Health and Human Services - George Mason University Was hoping there would be a few more options....

I hope you got into a refresher program. I am going to Montgomery College in Silver Spring for this in the spring, signed up last December 1.

I did George Mason's program back in 2013. They have a clinical portion to it which I found very valuable. The director of the program was very nice & professional. She really wanted every student to find job placement. Highly recommend this program.
TY for the info....Will look into the Mongomery college option as it may be closer to me in Laurel MD..ty
Howard CC in Columbia is another option. They also offer the nurse refresher program.
TY very much
Just signed up for Anne Arundel Community College refresher class.....they now have an online option...this class..NRN-521 starts march 7th...sort of go at ur own pace....and if one still has an active license..you do NOT require the labs/clinic portion, but you can still if so desire. Of course it is more $$$. I plan to take the lab/clinic option.
As I mentioned, started AACC on March 7th, and the online class completes June 20th. So it does take longer to complete than if one went the traditional classroom route. As well, it does state that if one requires the lab and hospital clinical portion, it can not be accomplished until one has completed NRN 521 (theory), but that is up in the air and one may be able to get that completed while still doing the theory portion, but the school is working on that. Pretty decent online classroom, takes a bit of time to figure out the layout...There is even an online chat room...Professor is very reachable and knowledgeable....One does have to BUY books....School bookstore was sold out of them on Day 1 of the course.....Never received a booklist..but should have asked, lol Was still in the mind frame from my RN to BSN school (GCU) that the books were online..NOT,lol So far, no complaints.....
Update! Completed the lab portion tha twas completed in the classroom at AACC. Instructor was great, very laid back. No one had any issues. Then onto 4 weekends at Anne Arundel Hospital on the med Surg floor. Different instructor, she was superb, and was a good clinical experience. All 8 of us poassed...staff was friendly. A great experience from start to finish, highly recommend AACC nurse refresher program

Hi Flames9_RN,
I am looking into AACCs program for next year. (I am in AA county) I am inactive and have been 20 years. Its going to be a long hard road to *refresh*, I think!
How is the program as far as testing goes? Suggestions what to study ahead of time?
Thank-you, Jeanne
