RN "refresher classes"

U.S.A. Arizona

Published

I have recently moved to AZ from MA. I have not worked in a hospital since 1986. I have primarily been working in correctional health for several years. I am interested in getting back into a hospital nursing but feel I need "refreshing" to say the least. I don't want to end up in a situation where I get thrown onto a floor to sink or swim and I fear that this may happen. Any suggestions??

I know that some hospital are better to work for than others. For instance in Boston, Brigham and Women Hospital was the place to work from a nursing perspective.. Any thoughts about Phoenix area hospitals would be appreciated.

Welcome to Phoenix. Some of the colleges offer refresher courses. Consider contacting the State Board of Nursing for a listing. Some hospitals require such a course when you've been away from hospital nursing for a certain period of time. As for the best places to work, try one of the Banner Health System facilities. They are found throughout the valley and although they are not the highest paying, they treat their nurses very well. Good luck!

I live in Tucson. I had been in Home Health for 12 years, yet when I went to apply to work in a hosptial, I was told I couldn't keep up!!!! They forced me to take an RN refresher course. I was the ONLY student who had actually been working!!!! I taught THEM a few things!!! Needless to say, the hospital I am working at now, for almost 2 years.... now has their OWN refresher, which I would have APPRECIATED alot. However, I have a GOOD friend from my class that I keep in touch with and would not have missed that!!! So all in all it is a good deal, BUT I would STILL contact the hospital you are interested in and find out what they have for people like you... believe me ON THE JOB retraining BEATS the class room if you can get it!!!
