RN or LPN to RN?

Published

hello everyone

i am currently attending community college and trying to complete my pre-requisites to get into the nursing program. My problem is that i feel like i already lost a lot of time in school because i took some semesters off and was only part-time. I was wondering if you guys know whether its better for me to take the LPN program work and go for my RN, or should i wait and do all the pre-requisites and transfer to a school that has an RN program? Which would take longer?

It really depends on your situation. My LPN school had almost identical pre-reqs as the RN program so that wasn't a consideration. I wasn't even sure I would like nursing and wanted the shortest program possible so those were some of the reasons I decided to do the LPN first. It was also nice to be working as a LPN while in the RN program. Good luck.

If you can go straight for your RN you will thank me later!

Definately LPN to RN if your prerequesites are the same for both. That is what I did. It took me one year to get my LPN and then one additional year to finish my RN, which I am currently doing and will graduate in just a few weeks. The experience I have had working as an LPN in the hospital is something you will never learn in the classroom or even clinicals. I was so much more confident going into my 2nd year. Good luck with whatever you decide!
