RN Diploma: California license by endorsment

Published

Specializes in OR.

I graduated nursing school with an RN Diploma in New Jersey in 1990. Licensed in NJ, PA and Oregon. Applied for California license in June but a coworker told me diploma nurses can’t get licensed in California because the diploma program Dosen’t meet minimum education requires and that AD is required. Can’t seem to get any info from CBRN. Any diploma nurses on here can confirm for me? Did you get a California license by endorsment?

Three year diploma grad in 1992 (later obtained BSN), multiple state licenses but endorsed by CA without question from Virginia.

Specializes in Psych, Corrections, Med-Surg, Ambulatory.

Diploma nurse here.  I got licensed by endorsement in California in 2009.  Yes, it was a bit ago so maybe they've changed things.

Specializes in Vents, Telemetry, Home Care, Home infusion.

CALIFORNIA REGS: Licensure by Endorsement

To qualify for endorsement (reciprocity) into California as an RN, you must hold a current and active RN license in another state, U.S. territory, or Canada, have completed an educational program meeting all California requirements, and have passed the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN®) or the State Board Test Pool Examination (SBTPE).

Checking current Ca BON website. appears they have No Diploma programs (my state PA still has 20+)

Sticking point some diploma grad have  is "completed an educational program meeting all California requirements"

From what I've read, you're unlikely to get licensed in CA. But the only way to get an actual answer is to apply (with fees paid and necessities submitted) and wait for the California BON to respond. It is not a quick process. You will not be refunded if they turn you down.
