Hi all,
I have a quick question for the educators. I'm an RN with a BSN who is interested in teaching middle school level Health class. In my state I have to be certified in teaching to do so, although I consider myself more qualified to teach Health than the teachers. My question, is there a way to become certified to just teach Health or do I have to earn a teaching degree? Thank you.

I've done a little research on this for Illinois but it will depend on the state and how badly they need the teachers. Here i would need a special "endorsement". it is not a teaching degree but it does require more education. Check with local college that educate teachers, they can probably steer you in the right direction.

Check with the school too. They should know. Also, there is a governing body on the state level for teachers and they probably have a website and/or phone.
BTW, I meant to add that having an expertise in health does not mean you know how to teach. I learned a lot about teaching, testing, creating curricula, etc in my education-based courses during grad school. They helped a lot and you will probably benefit from some of that type of learning. Good luck. I think it sounds wonderful.
Thank you for your response. I do understand that I will need additional education to know HOW to teach- but I meant that I already have the knowledge base of Health and i can add on to that with additional education. Thank you.
