RN-BSN vs RN-MSN

Published

I was told my my enrollment counselor that if you do the RN-B SN then the BSN-MSN there is an extra 9 credit hours as opposed to doing the RN-MSN directly. Although I have asked multiple times,he has not been able or willing to tell me what those additional 9 credits are. Can anyone elaborate? If they are long drawn out classes it might make a difference. The BSN program seems to accept a lot more students and has a much shorter wait to start than the direct to MSN route. Thanks!

You can take classes that count toward both your bachelors and masters, which will save you on credits (and time, money). At my program, there are 9 credits of these, and they let some of the ABSN students take them. Sounds like at your program they only let MSN students take them. For example, RN-BSN students will take pathophysiology which counts toward Bachelors and RN-MSN students will take Advanced Pathophysiology which counts toward both Bachelors and Masters. I looked at several programs that do this, and they vary on which courses do double duty. But in every case, the choice was to either take the undergrad (300 level) version of the course or take the Grad (500 level) version of the course, AKA the advanced version. Possibilities: Health Assessment/ Advanced Health Assessment. Health and Wellness/Advanced Health and Wellness. I hope this helps.
