RN to BSN online or on campus

Published

I am all set to start the online RN to BSN program at WGU. I am 70% of the way complete before I even start the program. The only non-nursing classes that I need to take are statistics in chemistry. However, I'm not sure if I will like online courses. I actually enrolled in an online chemistry and statistics course a semester ago. I hated it, so I dropped. However, to be fair, I really don't enjoy math and would prefer to take both of those courses in person. I have moved within the last 6 months and I am closer now to several schools that offer RN to BSN programs for adults in an evening setting or a hybrid version. I'm feeling like these options might be better for me. It's not that I am not computer savvy, because I am. Programs offered in both the Lincoln Nebraska and Omaha Nebraska area are available to me. What is your advice? Go ahead with the online program at WGU? Or look at some of the on campus programs in the evenings?

Had I not found an online college algebra course, I wouldn't be an RN today. The pop quizzes in the 1.25-hour classroom settings twice a week were just not enough for me to get a firm grip on the material. The online course that I took through DeVry University, however, had me earning a B in 2 weeks of an 8-week program. Of course, I was at it ALL day everyday that I was off from work since it was a self-paced, 8-week course. And I took it by itself. I did statistics through Straighterline online and got a C because, hey, it was statistics which, in my book, was worse than microbiology.

In the end, it's what works better for you. I needed a format that would allow me to do the repetitive study until I felt I was ready to be tested on the information. Good luck!

You do put a twist on it. Online classes were helpful to you, but I'm afraid that it will be the opposite for me. I hate the logging in, making comments to simulate classroom discussion, etc. You have definitely given me something to think about!

FWIW, you don't need to do the 'making comments to simulate classroom discussion' thing at WGU. There are no mandatory discussion boards like other schools.

As for the rest, I love online school, especially WGU where everything is at your pace. It's likely not for everyone, tho!
