Rio Salado Bio 156

Published

Hi, has anyone taken Bio156 online at Rio Salado before? Just curious on what their experience was like! I'm signed up for the accelerated class. ? I work full-time and this is the only class i'll be taking. I just need to take BIO 201, BIO 202 and BIO 205 and i'm done with my pre-reqs! :)

I'm currently in Bio 156 at Rio, I'm doing the 16-week course. I've gone back and forth between feeling like even the 16-week course is more than I can handle with the various labs that are due, but I also started out with a really poor grade on 1 of the first labs because I was finishing up a 4 week nutrition lecture and lab at MCC. I'm also doing these classes having been out of any school setting for about 4 years and haven't been in any kind of science class for over 10 years. I work a full-time job, a part-time job with consistent hours, and I deliver for doordash on the side, so I'm juggling a lot. There have been some labs that require some planning and one where I had to check on the experiment every hour for 4 hours, which ended up being that I was working on it until late at night. I'm also not a big fan of our assignments being due at 5pm on Saturdays, but I'm not sure if that is just my particular teacher or all classes at Rio. After not doing so well on the first exam, I'm making a bigger effort to stay ahead, so it feels more manageable now, but I'm pretty sure I ruined any chance of getting an A in the class. I don't know if this is at all helpful, but that's my thoughts on the class.

Hi, I’m planning on taking Bio156 at Rio in November. How difficult is the class online?

I'm just about done with the class, I have my last exam to take this week. I don't think the material was necessarily that hard, but I did find having to do the labs and fully understand the point of some of them doing them on my own. My grade took a hit really early on because I didn't give myself enough time to do all of the second or third lab and I only got about half the points. I also found the exams to be fairly challenging, but it was better once I started using the MindTap software to help with studying. I work a lot though (a 40 hr/week full-time job, a 15 hr/week part-time job, and doing door dash on the side as often as I can) so finding time to get school stuff done is difficult. It has also been 15 years since I graduated high school and about 12 years since the last time I took a science class.

Thanks for the fast response, wow you sound super busy. I haven't been in college for about 12 years at least so much longer for a science class and I'm nervous and keep going back and forth with taking BIO156 online but I think I will certainly give it a try.

Thanks again.

hi! I ended up taking BIO 201 at MCC. I’m taking an evening class this semester. I was too nervous to take it online at Rio Salado. I’m happy I’m taking it in person. I highly recommend if you’re able to!

Haha, the super fast response was partly due to my using this to procrastinate actually doing my Bio work...oops! I'm so close to being done with this class though. I feel like it's manageable to do online, but I am going to take future science classes on campus. I had been really hoping to get an A, in case I decide to apply for CEP, but I'm past the point of being able to pull of an A, so a B will have to do for this class. Because of the way Rio sets up their classes, I was still finishing a 5 week nutrition course online through MCC, so I think that didn't help me get off to a good start either. Good luck!!

So if you don’t mind me asking, if you had to do BIO 156 all over again would you do the class online or in person? Also who is your teacher.

Because I was just doing Bio 156 as a review before taking 201, I think I would still take it online. Future science classes that are more challenging like A&P I'll be taking in person. My teacher's name is Vanja Velickovksa, I don't know if it was her or just a Rio policy, but there was no room for make-up work or extra credit, which was a little frustrating. Otherwise, I didn't have any complaints.

How were the online exams? Especially lab practicals? Are they open book ?

Hello! Any updates on how your experience was in the class? I’ll be starting next week. I’m so bummed everything is online. I tend to absorb information and concentrate much better in a classroom. Taking any and all advice
