I got halfway through the BSN program at Kent State University when I had to take time off after having a baby. I tried to return after the birth (1st clinical course) and it was just impossible to manage. I had 3 kids under the age of 5 and nearly had a nervous breakdown that semester. Yikes! I also went on to have another baby, which prolonged my break. He's almost 3 now and I'm thinking about returning next Fall to move on to the junior sequence.
I am NERVOUS! I think I've forgotten everything and it's been so long! Anybody else return to NS after a long break?

I'm returning to school after almost 9 years out. Surprisingly, the program I was originally in wouldn't let me pick up where I left off at. I was not able to complete due to personal reasons. They wanted me to start from the very beginning. Unhappy, I started searching for other programs. I was fortunate to find a program that accepted my previous nursing credits but I had to test out of the courses to receive the credits.
I only had two weeks to prepare for a 100 questions fundamentals, med/surg and maternity written exam. Then I had to do a calculation exam and score 100% and finally I had to demonstrate 6 clinical lab skills. Out of everyone who attempted to test out that year (including LPN's), I was the only one to pass.
So yes, I do believe you can go back and be successful but it will require some reviewing on your part. At least your school allows you to return. Good luck

Well, I know they'll let me return but I'm not sure yet if they'll make me re-take any classes. I was actually supposed to return last Fall and they told me at the time that there were some returning students who had been out longer than I have. At that point, they weren't going to make me re-take anything but I don't know if that'll change now. I hope not because that's a lot more $$....Lord knows I've already got enough debt.
Well, I hope it all works out for you. I'm starting in a few weeks (the 24th to be exact) and six months pregnant. I just don't want to waste anymore time. Plus, if I don't start this fall, I would have to do all the testing all over again.
I hear ya about not wanting to waste anymore time. All these years I've felt like I've had a big, black cloud hanging over my head. I've had a lot of doubts and indecision....but ultimately I just have to finish what I started! I put so much work in already and managed to pull pretty decent grades despite demands from a family. It's TIME.
I agree. GL! :wink2:
