Retired nurse of 20 years needs job

Published

Retired for 20 years to raise my daughter. I now need a full time job. What can I possibly do? I do not want patient care. Very frustrated. Thanks

Are you in the US? Healthcare is a rapidly changing and evolving industry. Over the last 20 years, there have been significant changes in all areas of clinical care, technology, administrative processes, documentation rules, accreditation requirements, health care law, patient expectations, etc., etc. Therefore, at this point it is unfortunate, but your previous experience is simply no longer relevant in today's healthcare environment, even for non-clinical jobs.

Although most 'refresher' courses are focused on clinical care skills (which you have said you aren't interested in), this may be a place to start. If this is a no-go, you may want to consider formal cross-training into a related field such as health information management.

You may have to look outside of healthcare. Most positions that don't involve patient care require you to have recently done patient care. Have you considered going back to school for a different field of study?
