i am upset because i just found out the hospital i work for gives retention bonuses for RN's and they don't tell you about it. one of my fellow co workers came up to me and asked me if irecieved my $3,000.00 retention bonus?? i said what retention bonus?? several RN's have not been offered this and we knew nothing about it .. yet other RN's know about it and recieve it.. my sister works as a RN in the same company , but another hospital , and told me she gets a bonus every year. she told me to go to HR on friday when i work and sign up. why do they keep it so secret?? and has anyone else had this problem? i think if you give it to one you give it to all. :angryfire i have been at that hospital for 3 years ...

Hi kizzykatlove,

Please explain "What is a retention bonus?" I am a first year nurse and I have not yet heard of this bonus plan.

Thank you,

I would defininatlley call HR to find out. If you've been passed by they may need to give you back pay. Good luck.

Could be that the company has a plan for rewarding certain behaviors or service time - and the recommendations come from department leaders. This would mean you were not discriminated against. A retention bonus is not necessarily offered to every nurse. Does not hurt to ask anyway.

I wish I knew a hospital that gave ANY retention bonuses. But no, they spend $$$$ on recruitment, not retention. They consider "retention" being allowed to keep your job and get a measly raise each year you endure....

I agree with Tom, This is an HR issue. Get to HR and find out the facts and see what you can do about this.

We got a retention bonus one year. It went like this: RN's that had been there 10 years got $10,000, RN's that had been there 5 years got $6,000. But the govt took almost half-bonuses are taxed at a higher rate. Don't you just love Uncle Sam? Anyway, at the time I qualified for the $6,000 bonus, my check was $3200 after Sam saw it.

I really don't think Uncle Sam deserves a retention bonus, do you? But, what ya gonna do?
