dear xxx,
after much soul searching and with deep regret, i offer my letter of resignation, effective 10/15/2010.
i consider myself very fortunate, to have worked on such an excellent nursing unit with a wonderful talented team. my past two and half years on xxxxxx have been nothing but a positive experience. much of my professional and personal growth can be attributed to my time spent as a pct/sne on this unit.
as you are aware, i am in my last semester of nursing school. i have been given the opportunity to focus solely on school. i have decided to take this opportunity to maximize my ability to accomplish my set goal of becoming a registered nurse.
thank you for everything you have provided for me both personally and professionally. i have thoroughly enjoyed having you as a significant part of my life.
sincerely,
xxxx

I would drop the "much soul searching" and just start it off with "With deep regret."
Also, it looks like you only gave one week's notice, which could come back to haunt you in your RN job search. Two weeks' notice is the standard for most employers unless your facility's policy states otherwise. So unless the policy at your job is that a week's notice is sufficient and/or the place was truly miserable to work at, you should amend you last date of work.

I think it's perfect jus the way it is! It shows your appreciation no one could hold your decision against you with that letter. Very caring and clear that you plan to acheive your pre-set goals. Good Luck with school :heartbeat
