Relocation to Fairbanks AK with only 6 months experience...advice please!

U.S.A. Alaska

Hello everyone! I am brand new to this site but I figured what better way to get advice and pointers but from other nurses who have possibly gone through the same thing I am! Alright so, here is my situation. I graduated nursing school in December of this year and I started my first job in March. My husband and I recently got married and he is in the military (army to be exact) and I had to relocate to Alaska about 3 weeks ago. I had to leave my first job after only being there about 6 months. I have been told by the places I have applied thus far that they really prefer someone with at least 1 year of experience although they have said my resume looks great. Also, part of the problem is that we are currently located in Fairbanks, AK and there are not too many job opportunities available. I do have my Bachelors degree so I am hoping maybe that will help but I am just kind of unsure of what to do next. If anyone knows anything about the area or can give me some pointers of other places to look that would be wonderful! I am trying to think outside of the box and apply to as many different places as possible but I am just having a hard time. Thanks so much for any help any of you are able to give me or if not help just some encouragement!

The Banner LTC/SNF/Rehab there is always hiring. They do a lot of recruiting. The Banner hospital there also does a lot of recruiting. I am surprised you were having trouble, they have job postings.

I have applied to 6 jobs with Banner Health about 1.5 weeks ago and I have heard nothing. I am not sure if that is because the hiring process with that company takes a long time or if there is something else going on. Any suggestions?

The fastest hiring process I experienced was close to three weeks. I think when I had applied there about three years ago it about a month before I was called.

Thank you so much! I appreciate it :)

I just left Fairbanks about a month ago. I loved it up there. Have you looked at applying to the hospital on post, Basset? It would be a GS position and with you being a military wife you would get preference points. The hospital is great, I actually worked at the behavioral health clinic; not in a nursing capacity. I hope you enjoy your time in Alaska. Its beautiful. Good luck on the job search and with the patience thats needed while you wait to hear back.

Hello,

If your husband is Military and you are a nurse it might be a great idea to get into the GS federal employee program. Then every time he PCS's then the GS system will PCS you too, (with no loss or break in your work record either.)

Jen

p.s. the hiring process is very long though but, worth it because you won't have to apply every time he moves, you do it once.
