Hi There

just thought i would ask a question about what our other halfs will be doing when they get out to the USA?

or for you nurses already out there, what employment have your husbands/partners managed to find??

It is important for us all to settle as quickly as we can and i think part of that process is getting the hubbys getting work.

so..., whats the story???

:D

My husband will be carrying on part of his UK business when we go. His parents are out on the L1 visa & they have employed a US citizen already. It's been a really slow start but is picking up now. They really need my other half over because he's the one who'll push things on better.

Of course originally he had ideas that he was going to be a house husband & play golf every day :lol2:

We needed to make sure someone could be there for the children on the days I work so running his own business, as he does here, is the perfect thing. I guess we're really lucky on that count!

the only work available where we were was very poorly paid, so we made the decision that i would work and hubby stay at home. financialy it made sense for us, as i could work a few extra hours and get what he would have earned. it also meant that we needed another car. so he just did a few weeks work here and there, dog sitting, housw sitting and painting.

then on my nights off we could make the most of going to the beach every day.

now that we are mainland, he is trying to get a painting business off the ground with another nurse's hubby.

My dh was a well paid Police Officer in the UK when we got here he thought he wouldnt have a problem getting employment here in the US he thought he would be knocking them away with a stick!!! Nobody cared what he did in the UK nobody was interested in employing him. It was a shock to us as he is 35 with a miltary and police background we thought he would be very employable.

So he went to Blockbusters to work whilst he looked around for $6 per hour and the boss was a 23 yr old graduate who treated him like s**t. So he is now self employed doing jobs that others dont want to do-he earns enough but works outside in the 120 degrees heat and business was very very quiet through the summer. Oh yeah he got offer a job with Maricopa County as a security officer it paid $12.50 per hour but where we live he would have paid more in gas, insurance and risk life and limb-just not worth it.

Another husband friend was a skilled workman and he could only get a job in HOme Depot and that paid $11 an hour-they have since relocated and he has set up a home repair company.

You can only imagine how poor we are as I was involved in RTA and havent worked in 7 months.

He got 4 or 5 free hires per week I think I cant remember. I think he got a discount as well if he bought one. I will ask him later. In the library they have great ones to take out too and it costs nothing, the best bit is you can take up to 50 items from the library per time. They also have free internet access so while you are waiting for internet access at home it will be a neat way to get on line for an hour.

H2B is a doctor and is doing his post grad in Boston hence why I want to move over asap. He just started there in June and its tough going as you can imagine from harvard affiliated hospitals. The pay isn't what it is back home,a take home of about 2600 every month and he has laon repayments and rent which leaves him with about 4-600 spending a month however if he stays on after his 4 years the pay is about triple.

My husband is a qualified teacher in religious studies, he is also a research student doing his Phd. He is hoping to transfer his research to a uni in the states. Hopfully he will make some contacks and get some hours teaching or something. Other than that for the monent he will have to stop at home and sort the kids out, taking then to school ect.

Does that apply to all libraries in Phx Metro/AZ? Sounds great.

Cheers

I suggest, getting a job in a place with lots of jobs. Or try the warehouses. Sparks, NV has alot of them. Also try the FedEx and the UPS, they pay over $12 an hour.

Or, start your own business... even on ebay. Research on what sells alot and spend some time finding where you can buy them cheap. Alot of Americans I know own their own business.
