In patient length of stay for para and quadraplegic patients

  1. Was just curious what the average length of stay was in various hospitals for newly injured patients. I am in Switzerland and our patients stay an average of 6 mths for paraplegics and 9 months for quadraplegics. We are an acute and rehab hospital for spinal cord injuries.

Our SCI folks typically stay from 1-4 months depending on the level of injury and progression during their stay. That is fairly typical across the US from what I have seen. Very interesting about how much longer they stay in Switzerland comparatively!

Our SCI patients (paraplegia, quadriplegia, etc.) only stay an average of two to six weeks at the most. Their length of stay is partially determined by the FIM scoring upon admission, their insurance carrier, case management, and how well they progress in their various therapies. I work at an acute rehab hospital owned by a national chain.
