Registered practice nurse ? union

Hi Everyone

I need help with a few questions? I have just received my work visa . I have a temporary RPN cert from the CNO and hoping to do RPN exam in May. I was looking at jobs today and came across jobs which stated they are unionised by caw ect and they have a number beside this . Could anyone tell me do I need to be in a union or is the job for only those in this union, which union do I choose,does it have a big effect on what job you apply for. If I have 11 years experience in nursing does this effect the rate I am paid. Are they quite official interviews or more relaxed. I am here 7 months in Ontario and I have not met anyone in nursing,so I thought I speak to you. Thank you

If the job is unionized that means that people already working in the system will have a priority in the hiring process. You need to look for positions that say "open to the public". Once hired, you join the union. Fill up a form and pay the dues each payday. You don't get to pick the union to join at a job site.

It is up to the individual employer where they will start you on the pay scale. Where is your experience from? In Canada, we can "port" our hours from province to province and employer to employer when we move to another province.

Thanks Fiona the information which is great. My experience is from the UK and Ireland so I suppose I will have to see were they start me off.

Our hours only "port" for placement on the pay scale, not for any other issue where hours might be important such as seniority or vacation entitlement.
