References Help

I am an RN with over a year experience starting to look for a new job, but I don't know who I should use as references. I'm not quite ready to tell my current boss that I am job searching, so I don't want to put her as a reference. But it is my first real nursing job so I have no other previous employer I could put down (unless you count my boss from a CNA position?). I have recommendation letters from nursing school professors, but they were all written when I was still a new graduate so they refer to me as a "new graduate nurse" which is not the case anymore. Would it be bad to use those letters? I also considered asking a few trusted coworkers if I could use them as references but I wasn't sure if they would be considered a strong reference or not.
