Hi everyone! I will be starting my first semester of nursing school this upcoming fall and I am interested in purchasing a "fundamentals of nursing" book to glance at during the summer so I can prepare myself and get a head start for my fundamentals course. What is a good nursing fundamentals book that you recommend for a new nursing student? Thanks in advance! :)

i heard that Fundamentals Success was pretty good. I downloaded it for my kindle but liked it enough that I went ahead & ordered a hard copy.

If you want to get a headstart, begin with you colleges bookstore. They always list the textbooks you need as weel as any modules ste out by the nursing department. I purchased modules and text ahead to get an idea of the reading schedule. I don't know if it will help in the long run because I start next week but I think it will. Some of the assigned reading is like over 100 pages.

Thats gonna be tough because I did the same and purchased a fundamentals review book before I started this past winter and I never used it. It was very hit or miss with info that I needed to know and most I didn't. One other thing is even if you can find out which text you're using my fund. text is gi-normous (excuse my made up word) and we would cover chapt. 1,4, and 42 for 1 section then Chapt. 3,34, and 29 so it's really hard to know how it's going to be taught. I know it kills you though because we all wait so long to apply and then you get accepted then the real wait begins and takes forever!!! Just enjoy your time off and get everything else in order so you won't have to worry or be distracted when you start your program in the fall. I don't how your school is but our professor's opened our course in blackboard over a month ahead of time so then you can get started then :)

That bugs me so much too. I wish teachers wouldn't do that.

The books are so expensive that I would recommend buying the book that your school requires you to buy. Plus, it makes more sense to start reading the book that you will be using anyway! :)

Buy the book that will be used by your teacher. You can ask her for the name of the book.

I wouldn't get a textbook but I would get Nursing Fundamentals Reviews and Rationales. Awesome book! Love it and don't leave home without it. Its a nice study aid in addition to your textbook. I just ordered the one for Med Surg for next semester, love this series and I think it helped my exam grades this semester.

I am also going to recommend the book your program requires, because it doesn't matter ONE BIT what those other books say when it comes to you written and practical exams. The only thing that matters is what the teachers tell you the correct procedures are, and in most cases, they are pulling it from the text you are required to purchase. When we try to clarify with an instructor, she just looks at us and say, "What does your book say?"

LOL. Because they don't know. I've given up on asking questions. I've only gotten an answer to one of the 15-20 I've asked since August.

You could get a NCLEX review book like Saunders or HESI and read over the fundamentals section. You'll also be able to use it as a study aid throughout school, and as a review when it's time to take the NCLEX.
