Recommendation Woes!

Published

Hello! I am in my last semester of prerequisites for Nursing school and contacted two of my professors to ask if they would write recommendations for me for one of the schools to which I'm applying. One was my Micro prof and the other my A and P prof. I did very well in both subjects and figured their word would be an asset for me. Both profs got back to me almost immediately to say they would be happy to do it for me. I supplied the forms, enclosed a stamped envelope and left them in their mailboxes as we had agreed. I followed up with e-mails to say "It's in your mailbox" and thanked them profusely. My Micro prof got it done within 1 1/2 weeks and e-mailed me back to say she had done it. I got word from the school that that my application is complete except for the rec from my A and P prof. They encouraged me heavily to get it in and told me I had a good looking application. It's a really good school and I'd love to get in. I e-mailed my A and P prof and very nicely "reminded" him about the recommendation form and that the school was urging me to get it in. That was last Thursday. He has not responded to my e-mail and I checked today and the recommendation still isn't there. I'm a nervous wreck now and am not sure what to do. How do you "nag" someone to do a favor for you that they had agreed to do? Suggestions, help, anybody in this boat?

I would ask someone else to do it for you. Don't let him hinder your application.

Try to see if your academic advisor or another professor can do the reference for you ASAP. Your A & P instructor just must be too busy. I wouldn't wait or keep asking him for it if you already reminded him. He then will probably just get annoyed and then the review may not be want you expected.

I ran into a similar situation. I just called the person that was holding up my reference. She then did do it for me but it turned out not to be official enough. (I was a volunteer with girl scouts) I then asked my academic advisor at the university I attend to write one for me. She was happy to do it for me and did it right away. She even followed up with me to let me know she completed it.

I agree...try to get someone else to do t for you...just let them know what your situation is and they should be sympathetic. I too am waiting for recommendations and expressed urgency and a week and 1/2 is gone...I may be following my own advice for both recs! : (

I think I will go by in person in addition to emails.

Good Luck! b

Aprilhere is right, you should be proactive and get another reference from someone else. You can't just sit on your hands waiting for this person to live up to their commitment, and I certainly wouldn't try to pressure someone who appears to be reluctant to give me a reference - at that point you have no idea what they are going to say!

Move on, and find someone else asap.

Thank you all! I took your advice and found another teacher to do it. He already has mailed it! The prof who dropped the ball, ironically, finally e-mailed me this afternoon to say he will have it in the mail by tomorrow morning. I'm not counting on it and I don't have to at this point. I do feel tremendously relieved. So, Thanks all!
