Recent NY Grads Getting Jobs?

Hi all- Just wondering if any recent NY nusring program grads could weigh in on whether their job search has been moderately difficult (standard), extremely difficult or close to impossible? Also, have you been forced to apply for jobs out of state? I read the article on here talking about how there is actually NOT a nursing shortage and how many people are having a really hard time finding work. That is not really in line with what so many of these schools are telling us prospective students and I would love to hear what real life NY grads have experienced? THANKS!

Brookdale Hospital in Brooklyn just fired over 200 people. Some nurses were included.

As far as my exp. has been with the job hunt it certainly feels downright impossible. I graduated May 08 and as of yet still have not landed a job and only received ONE call back from the countless applications ive put in. However, there have been people who've been able to get something. Every recruiter has said that its been a first for them this year, with the recession, budget cut backs, lay offs and hospital closings, theres quite an overabundance of applicants.

It's tough out there. I know of several new grads that are having moderate difficulty. There are many classmates that I graduated with in Dec. 2008, who have passed their boards and are now simply waiting to hear. Some people are considering looking further out on Long Island (Good Sam and other points east). However, this will certainly not be the case forever. There is still a nursing shortage and it is expected to grow substantially in the near future. From what I've learned, while positions continue to go unfilled, the facilities are a little less "liberal" with hiring right now due to this rough economic patch we are going through.

I was lucky enough to be employed at a hospital already and was transferred to an RN position. Even that was tough as the position pool was extremely scant for new grads - experienced nurses are securing the most desirable positions (for obvious reasons). So I accepted what they offered. No matter where you begin in nursing it is always a learning experience!

In light of the current hiring situation, my advice to current nursing students would be to get your foot in the door somewhere, somehow. :)

Thanks MrsGPR, it's important to keep a level head, I appreciate your message. I am still a ways off in terms of becoming a "recent grad" but I was tempted to ask my question nonetheless. There are, as usual, many ways to look at the situation and I'm going to try not to freak myself out too early in the process!
